Amberley is part of the Amberley Ward which includes the other satellite towns of Amberley Beach, Leithfield, Leithfield Beach and surrounding lifestyle blocks and farms. This is the fastest growing ward in the district. The whole district extends up to Cheviot and to Hanmer Springs.
The Waipara Vineyard District is few minutes drive north of Amberley. The region produces world class wines including Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer.
Award winning vineyard restaurants with stunning outlooks are a great way for locals and tourists to relax and unwind.
The wine trail is a superb cycling trail through the vineyards, where some spectacular scenery can be enjoyed and various vineyards and restaurants are accessed along the way.
There are many other walking and cycling tracks throughout the area.
The district is blessed with some wonderful rivers which provide recreation in the form of fishing, off roading, whitebaiting, cycling, hiking, or simply picnicking.
Amberley itself is 40 metres above sea level, however various Beaches are only a few minutes drive away, including Amberley Beach, Leithfield Beach and Ashworths beach.
The resort town of Hanmer Springs is an hours drive away and the thermal spa and pools is owned by the district council, ie ratepayers own it. This is a profitable business which helps maintain services throughout the district and keep the lid on rates. Rates are quite reasonable in Hurunui. Ratepayers are able to obtain a discount card to the pools.
